Mr. Porter Winter Sale Starts

The Mr. Porter winter sale has officially started. If you are a long-time reader of this blog or well-versed in menswear sales, you probably already know that Mr. Porter semi-annual sales are usually among the best of the best when it comes to a combination of quality of stock, return policy, free shipping, and low prices. Items start at up to 50% off and then the scale escalates every two weeks, eventually hitting 80% off and setting off an orgy of impulse buys. Each time the sale hits a new tier or new stock drops (which happens a few times during the course of the event), things get nutty.

A general rule of thumb for the sale - Hurry up and wait.

Schott NYC (will sell out this morning)

Immediately buy the things which you can't live without or items which don't often go on sale/are highly sought after. In the first stage that usually means footwear and things like classic leather jackets (Schott cafe jackets and Perfectos at 50% off, for example, mostly ran through their stock in the early hours of the morning). For the rest, keep your eye on things you'd like to buy but wouldn't kill you if they got scooped up while you're waiting for a deeper discount. Then wait patiently for the next tier. When that next level hits in two weeks, hurry up. Then wait again.

If you're on the fence about something, though - by all means just try it. One of the biggest differentiators between Mr. Porter sales and other blowout sales is that there's no risk involved due to their return policy. I'm not saying buy 40 things and return them all (that's a good way of getting yourself on a store's blacklist), but things often move very quickly in these types of affairs.

I was initially thinking of putting some quick picks here, but honestly, it would be much of the same list that Derek from Die, Workwear posted earlier this morning. My favorites of the morning are probably the Schott shearling bomber or those Viberg boots linked below. Honestly, though, you really should take the time to look through everything yourself as things move fast and lists become outdated rather quickly (much of the stuff I was going to post has already sold out). I usually start out by sorting by discount, then going back and sorting by size and designers I'm particularly interested in in case I missed something on the first pass.

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.
