Secondhand Japanese Online - RAGTAG Opens on Ebay

RAGTAG Harajuku, Tokyo (from my trip 2016)

One of the largest secondhand clothing shops (also known as "reuse" shops) in Japan, RAGTAG, has quietly opened up a storefront on eBay. To date, most Japanese secondhand stores have been limited to online sales on their own independent sites, Yahoo Japan auctions, or Rakuten, through which you've had to use a proxy service to buy and ship out of the country (here's a guide on how to do that). Aside from that, the only other ways to purchase Japanese clothes domestically are from boutiques in the US that import them and secondhand from individuals here. Over the past year or so, there's been a gradual influx of Japanese sellers onto sites like eBay and Grailed, but RAGTAG joining the action is a real whale compared to the little fish that were swimming around before.

There are thousands of listings to go through, but inside you'll find items from brands like Tomorrowland, Blue Blue Japan, Kaptain Sunshine, ts(s), and Naissance, as well as larger brands like Beams/Beams Plus, Urban Research, and Journal Standard. The kicker is that they're all listed with shipping price included, and for the most part are well-priced vs. items that were imported to Western boutiques first. Full disclosure: their pictures are horrible, and it can be downright difficult to tell what the hell is going on sometimes. The flipside to that is that Japanese shops like this use a rating system for grading the condition of their wares that's generally very dependable. They also take and post measurements of all their clothes - a virtual necessity for buying clothes abroad. I'd generally recommend going one size larger than your US/EU sizing (1=S, 2=M, etc.), so I usually buy a size 2 while I wear a small in US brands for the most part. If you're a bigger guy (US large or above) I also wouldn't get your hopes up. You're a giant in Japan, and pickings are slim for giants.

For convenience sake, I made a list at the end of this post where I've bookmarked the items from a few brands of interest. You might notice some have very few things at the moment (the Kapital search only has women's clothes at the time of this posting), but I would expect stock to ebbs and flow, as long as RAGTAG decides to continue selling here. The store also sells non-Japanese luxury clothes from designers like Tom Ford, Saint Laurent, and Balmain, but I probably shouldn't have to tell you:

"These aren't the clothes you're looking for."
